The Income Tax Department has made this process hassle-free by providing an online e-filing portal.

Income tax Registration

An individual have to register first in order to be able to login to the Income Tax portal. If the registration process is already done, then continue with the Login process provided in this article below.

Before you can log in, you need to register on the portal. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Visit the official website: https://www.incometax.gov.in/
  • Click on the ‘Register’ link on the home page.
  • Enter your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and click ‘Proceed’.
  • Select ‘Individual’ as the user type and click ‘Continue’.
  • Fill in your personal details, such as name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, and residential address.
  • Verify your mobile number and email ID by entering the one-time passwords (OTPs) received on them.
  • Set a strong password containing uppercase, lowercase, numeric, and special characters.
  • Click ‘Register’ to complete the registration process.

Your PAN will become your User ID for logging into the portal.

Income Tax Login

Once you’ve registered, you can log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal by following these steps:

  • Enter your User ID (PAN) and the password you set during registration.
  • Click ‘Continue‘ to log in to your account.

Know Your User ID for Income Tax Login Portal

User ID can be PAN, Aadhaar Number, or Other User ID. It depends on the type of establishment you are. All details that which type of organization can use PAN, Aadhaar, or other details as their User IS is provided below:

User IDs Related to PAN (Permanent Account Number)

For Individuals:

  • Salaried Employees
  • Senior Citizens
  • Freelancers
  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)

For Non-Individuals:

  • Companies
  • Trusts
  • Association of Persons (AOPs)
  • Artificial Juridical Persons (AJPs)
  • Body of Individuals (BOIs)
  • Firms
  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
  • Local Authorities

Aadhaar Number as a User ID

  • Used as a user ID for individuals like salaried employees, senior citizens, freelancers, and NRIs.

Other User IDs

  • For Chartered Accountants (CAs): ARCA followed by a 6-digit number
  • For Tax Deductors & Collectors: TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number)
  • For ERI (External Reporting Intermediary) Users: ERIP followed by a 6-digit number
  • For TIN 2.0 Stakeholders: TINN followed by a 6-digit number
  • For External Agencies: EXTP followed by a 6-digit number
  • For Income Tax Department Reporting Entity: ITDREIN (user ID is the PAN/TAN of the reporting entity followed by 2 letters and 3 digits)
  • For Non-Residents not holding and not required to have PAN: NR followed by 2 letters and 6 digits

Linking Your Bank Account

After logging in for the first time, it’s essential to link your bank account to receive any tax refunds directly. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Go to ‘Profile Settings’ > ‘My Bank Accounts’ > ‘Add Bank Account’.
  • Enter your bank account details accurately, including account number, account type, IFSC code, and branch details.
  • Click ‘Validate’ to link your bank account successfully.

Exploring the Portal

Once you’ve logged in and linked your bank account, you can explore various features and services offered by the Income Tax e-Filing portal:

  • View Form 26AS (TDS from salary/interest, etc.): Go to ‘e-File’ > ‘Income Tax Returns’ > ‘View Tax Credit’.
  • View Annual Information Statement (AIS): Go to ‘Annual Information Statement (AIS)’ and select ‘Tax Credit Statement’ or ‘Detailed Statement’.
  • File Income Tax Returns (ITRs): Go to ‘e-File’ > ‘Income Tax Returns’ and follow the steps.
  • View/track outstanding tax demands: Go to ‘My Account’ under the ‘View’ menu.
  • View tax payments and challan details: Go to ‘My Account’ under the ‘Tax Payment’ menu.
