Who Can Use the ITR Status Service?

The ITR Status service is available to the following registered users:

  • Individual taxpayers: All taxpayers can view the status of ITRs filed against their Permanent Account Number (PAN).
  • Authorized Signatories: Individuals authorized to file ITRs on behalf of organizations can view the status of returns filed in their capacity.
  • Enrolled Return Intermediaries (ERIs): Tax professionals registered as ERIs can access the status of ITRs filed through their services.
  • Representative Assessees: Individuals authorized to represent taxpayers can check the status of ITRs filed on behalf of those they represent.

The ITR Status service allows users to:

  • View and download the ITR-V Acknowledgment, JSON file (from the offline utility), complete ITR form in PDF format, and any intimation orders issued.
  • Check if any returns are pending for verification.

Prerequisites for Using the ITR Service

Before Logging In:

  • You must have filed at least one ITR on the e-Filing portal and obtained a valid acknowledgment number.
  • You should have a registered mobile number to receive One-Time Passwords (OTPs) for verification.

After Logging In:

  • You must be a registered user on the e-Filing portal with a valid user ID and password.
  • You should have filed at least one ITR on the e-Filing portal.

How to Check ITR Status Online Process: Step-by-Step Guide

To check the ITR status online, follow the steps provided below:

ITR Status (Pre-Login)

Step 1: Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal which is https://www.incometax.gov.in/. Here click on the login option. Enter your User ID and click on Continue.

Step 2: Here click on Services -> Know Your Refund Status.

Step 3: An Income Tax Return (ITR) Status page will open on your screen. Here, enter your acknowledgment number and mobile number and click on the Continue button.

Step 4: Now enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number in the designated area and click Submit.

Note:

  • OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only.
  • You have 3 attempts to enter the correct OTP.
  • The OTP expiry countdown timer on screen tells you when the OTP will expire.
  • On clicking Resend OTP, a new OTP will be generated and sent.

Here, if your PAN is not linked with your Aadhaar, you will see a pop-up message on your screen that your PAN is made inoperative as it is not linked with your Aadhaar.

To link the PAN with your Aadhaar, click on the Link Now button else click on the Continue option.

Step 3: The View Filed Returns page allows you to access all the income tax returns you’ve filed. From this page, you can download various documents related to your filings, including the ITR-V Acknowledgement, the JSON file uploaded using the offline utility, the complete ITR form in PDF format, and any intimation orders. These options are conveniently located on the right-hand side of the page for easy access.

Note: In the event that your Permanent Account Number (PAN) is marked as inoperative, you will receive a pop-up message stating: “Refund cannot be issued as your PAN is Inoperative.” To resolve this issue, you can click the “Link Now” button to associate your PAN with your account. Alternatively, if you prefer to proceed without linking your PAN at this time, you can click the “Continue” button.

  • Click Filter to view your filed returns based on different criteria (AY or Filing Type).
  • Click Export to Excel to export your returns data to Excel format.

  • Now click View Details to view the life cycle of the return and action items related to it (e.g., returns pending for e-Verification).

  • In case the PAN is inoperative.
